Farewell Talk

Today was the day that I delivered my farewell talk! I cant believe it! I leave here so soon but feel like I have so much left to do! I love you all and please know you will be greatly missed.

I remember a few short months ago when I first opened my mission call thinking “Really? I have to wait 73 whole days to go on my mission!?” Now, with only a little over a week left I can’t seem to wrap my head around the idea of how fast time has gone by. Packing, shopping, and more packing went by and now I’m up here delivering my farewell talk. The decision to serve a mission for me was not an easy one, it wasn't something I woke up to one morning, and it wasn't something that I've dreamt of since I was a little girl. I remember hearing the mission age change thinking “Oh my gosh that’s so great- for the other girls. That is so cool- for the other girls who plan on serving missions.” But as time went by random thoughts kept entering my mind, “I’m gonna serve a mission.” Then I’d brush it to the side not thinking anything of it. Again “I’m gonna serve a mission.” I wouldn't even pray about it, because I was scared I already knew the answer. It wasn't in my plans.
The thoughts happened more and more and more so I finally gave in and prayed about it, I prayed harder than I ever thought I could. And you know what I learned? God’s plans aren't always the same as my plans. And since then I've learned that same principle again and again. The idea of a mission grew on me. I became more and more sure that it was the right thing to do and I became more and more excited about it. I knew that somewhere in this big scary world, someone needed me. Little blonde Megan, from Lakeville. Someone in this world was praying to God for what? help, comfort, and guidance? Cure to addiction? An end to loneliness? I don’t know. All I know is that by giving myself to the Lord for a small time, I could just be the answer to what someone is praying for.
Throughout his years as our prophet, President Monson has encouraged us as members to “Reach out to Rescue” Not only as missionaries but as church members, neighbors, friends, associates, families, and in all other aspects of our lives. He goes on explaining ways to do this such as service to others, inviting people to church, standing as an example, sharing your beliefs and many more. We can rescue friends of different faiths, members who have fallen away, and we can even help the friends and loved ones who have passed on through temple work. It’s a scary thing putting yourself out there. Risking embarrassment, rejection, ridicule, the list goes on and on. But just think how grateful that person will be when they come back to church after years being inactive and realizing how much they've missed it, or how about when your friend comes to church for the first time and feels a happiness and peace she’s never felt before, or even when your ancestors finally receive the blessings of the temple after years and years of waiting in anticipation. “And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father! And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!” (D&C 18:15-16)
As my mission has drawn closer I've received a few emails from my mission president in Guayaquil Ecuador. One email he sent talked about “Our Mission” and the people of Guayaquil. He states  “too many of them have fallen away over the years, and so besides the great work of finding, teaching, and baptizing our Father’s children, we have the great opportunity to work alongside Him in finding and rescuing His lost sheep.” After reading that I realized something, I realized that the people in Guayaquil, thousands of miles away, in a different country, speaking a different language, have something in common with us. We all need help. We all need someone to reach out and rescue us. The people of Ecuador need someone to stop by and see how they are doing, invite them to come back to church, just like the people of Lakeville.
The idea of “Reaching out to rescue” will be present for me in many ways for the next 18 months. The first thing that comes to mind will be as I learn the Spanish language. My Companion will be rescuing me a lot, I am sure. Another one that comes to mind will be as I enter the MTC in Mexico, the support and prayers from my family and loved ones will rescue me as well as strengthen me. Lastly, as I lay in bed at night tired and discouraged thinking, what in the world am I doing here? Am I good enough to be here? My Savior, the only one who will know exactly how I am feeling, will reach out his loving marked hands and rescue me, little blonde Megan from Lakeville.
When we reach out to others, we can in part become a little more like our Savior. Offering a relief that only His gospel can give. By putting our imperfect selves out there, offering a perfect gospel, Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ will make up the rest. Even if the person we help is just a little “so-and so” from Lakeville, or Guayaquil, or anywhere else in the World they deserve a chance to be rescued. It’s just our job to offer it. “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God” (D&C 18:10)
My life has changed so much in the past couple years. I felt like someone has just hit the fast forward button and forgotten to press play again. I graduated, went to BYU in Provo, went to BYU in Idaho, my sister got married, I received a mission call, I have friends serving missions, getting engaged, perusing degrees and facing all kinds of “Grown-up” decisions and trials. I know that some of you younger kids are sitting in the pews eating cheerios and coloring and can’t quite yet think of such things. But they come, and sometimes it’s hard. I know some of you older folks in the chapel are thinking “Wow, I remember when I was that young. And I remember thinking that stuff was hard. It came and went, and it was hard but you face even harder things.” We all go through tough things in our lives, whether it be as a young kid feeling like you don’t have friends, a teenager who hangs with the wrong crowd, a young adult trying to face the world, or a grown up trying to raise and provide for a family. We all could use a little rescuing. We all need to be like our Savior and listen to our prophet’s call to reach out and rescue. And times will come where we are looking for someone to reach out and praying to God for an answer… and wondering to ourselves. “What in the World am I doing here, Lord, help me be good enough.” and we will feel like there is no answer. But be patient, the Lord hears your prayers. He sent a savior to this earth before we were even born to answer our prayers, to comfort us, to cleanse us, to guide us, and to rescue us.
President Monson continues his address saying “In this remarkable dispensation of the fullness of times, our opportunities to serve one another are limitless. We’re surrounded by those in need of our attention, our encouragement, our comfort, our support, our kindness—[…] As we serve our fellowman, we serve the Lord. “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these …, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). May we ever be found performing such service.” He goes on explaining not only are we helping others by doing this but helping ourselves and receiving blessings from the Lord.
I know that President Monson is a Prophet of God, given to us for instruction and guidance in these latter-days. I know that his message to reach out to rescue is God sent. And by doing so we are becoming more like our Savior. A couple months ago I came across something in the ensign. To which sadly I couldn't find the direct quote for, but it said something along the lines of in a world where such sorrow and hurt are present its easy to become discourage and afraid. But we already know who wins the fight. We already know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, we know that God’s goodness beats evil in the end, it’s all just a matter of choosing which side we are on on. President Monson finishes his statement by saying “As we now go forward, may we follow His example. He left His footprints in the sands of the seashore, but He left His teaching principles in the hearts and in the lives of all whom He taught. He instructed His disciples, and to us He speaks the same words, “Follow thou me” (John 21:22). May we ever be found doing so.”

I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve. I know that this truly is Christ’s church. I know that Christ lives and his gospel still lives on this earth because of the effort and faith of Joseph Smith. I know that he was a prophet of God sent to deliver us the Book of Mormon. I know that all the lessons in church, early mornings in seminary, institute classes, and prayers from family and leaders have all pointed me here. They brought me here so that I could worthily go through the temple and that I can stand here today and thank you for supporting me as a missionary. I felt like the Grinch from Dr. Seuss’s “The Grinch who stole Christmas” because when I opened my mission call my heart grew three sizes that day. I love people I have never met, and who I’m going to struggle to communicate with for quite some time. I know with the Lord’s help all things are made possible and I know I am in good hands. I love you all so much. You will be greatly missed. I am grateful for my family and friends. They have given me so much and still give every day. I’m going to miss them dearly. But know that the Lord needs me, and I am just answering his call. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Crazy Cat Lady

My sister Jessica has always been crazy in-love with animals. She always wanted to be a vet, to help with animals like horses, cats, dogs, you name it. Growing up we've had a variety of pets mostly cats and dogs, the usual, but no matter what point in our life we were at or where we lived we were surrounded by pets. Horses, sheep, cats, hermit crabs, turtles, fish, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, and about a bazillion different breeds of dogs.

Now that she is married and out living her own life she was able to buy a couple pets of her own. I wouldn't quite call her a "crazy cat lady" but we all know that's where she is headed, haha (love ya, Jess)

The other day I was over at her house with my fancy-pants camera waiting to go on a dinner-date with her, my brother-in-law, and my boyfriend so I was messing around and snapped a few pictures.

This little guy's name is Ace. He is cute, but annoying. Definitely a "little brother" type personality. He likes to paw at your toes and he loves his mommy Jessica :) He is fun to play with, and apparently loves to get his picture taken.

Meet Jynx (she is totally my favorite) she is a little on the chubby side, has a sassy-pants kind of attitude, and loves me :) She is always sleepy or lazy and loves to cuddle.

I'm definitely not a cat person, but I do like these cats. (Clarification, I don't want a cat and I don't really like cats, I just like when other people have them, haha)

So when Jessica is 95 years old she will be surrounded by 10.. 20... maybe 30 different cats. Me on the other hand will be the crazy dog-lady that lives next door.

We currently have two dogs at home. A boxer named Duke (who I've introduced before) and a miniature dachshund named Tootsie.

Duke is my brothers pup (not really a pup anymore) that thinks he is a human. He gets upset that he cant do human things and it is really funny to watch. He loves my little brother Garret and is just overall a doofus, a really really cute doofus.

Tootsie is my dog and is seriously the funniest thing ever. Not only is she a wiener dog (which makes her inherently funny) but she just acts so dumb all the time. She is definitely not the smartest crayon in the box but I love her!

Funny thing is her body shape is really convenient. For example, If I am wearing a hoodie with a kangaroo type pocket she will weasel her way in it and just sit there. Head poking out one end, behind poking out of the other. Gotta love her.

My family loves animals, we always have. We grew up around them and they've just stuck. I'm gonna miss them along with my family when I leave for Ecuador!

Have a nice night everyone, sorry for the random posting!

XOXO, Megan

The Final Countdown

I cant believe how quickly time escapes you when you have so much to get done. It's almost comical. When I first came home from BYU-I the days seemed long and careless. Especially in contrast to my fleeting and stress filled days I have recently encountered.

However stressed or scared I may be I need to keep in mind that I am doing great things. This thought has been repeatedly brought up to me by my awesome mom and is something I try to keep in mind. I feel like a lot of the time I get so caught up in the checklist of things to do and things to worry about that I forget to just step back and breathe.

Breathe in, I can be stressed and happy. Breathe out, This is the right thing for me. Breathe in, I'm going to a beautiful place. Breathe out, and God will be with me every step of the way....

I'm so excited for my mission, and I still have 100% confidence that this is where I should be at this point in my life. I cant help but obsess over every detail and stress about the little things because that's just who I am. BUT that doesn't mean I cant enjoy today. My mission is coming fast! I need to make my last days here happy ones. I have so many loved ones supporting me and so many awesome things happening!

Here is just a few to prove it...

I turn NINETEEN in two days! On the 28th I will officially be old enough to serve a mission! It's funny to look back and see all the amazing experiences this last year has given me. I cant wait to see what this one brings!

ALSO.

I see Cameron soon!!!
For those of you who haven't seen my sappy Facebook posts, Cameron has been away at school for the past couple months and we haven't been able to see each other for quite some time (114 days to be exact.. haha) AND HE IS FINALLY COMING HOME! I see him next Wednesday and couldn't be more excited! He is my best friend and I love him to death. I'm sure my family is just as excited to have him back because I'm pretty positive I have been driving them crazy.

A lot of chapters in my life are coming to a close as my mission draws near...but I can keep smiling because "When God closes a door, somewhere He opens a window"

"If I could write a letter"

If I could write a letter
I'd know just where to send
I'd send it straight to heaven
where beginnings know no end

Where time and love are endless,
Where sin and shame are gone
Time, I've spent there once before-
bringing comfort with the dawn

The letter would be simple-
tho' I've so much to say
I'd thank my Lord and Savior,
for the price He had to pay

I have no way to thank thee,
for blessings big and small
I know I'm far from perfect,
but I know you can heal all

There are some who cannot see,
the love this gospel gives
So I must serve my Father
to show them that "Christ lives"

I know this is my purpose
I know God's on my side
I know I will face sorrow
I know I will face pride

This will be my letters end,
To God above I pray
for safety and for blessings
and to lead me on my way

Dear God above I love thee,
and am grateful for thy Son
I end this letter in His name
for my work has just begun

I'm BAAAACK

I'm back in Minnesota and just in time for great weather *insert sarcasm here*
Seriously though... It's been freezing! Literally! I think the lowest it has been these past couple weeks is -27 degrees Fahrenheit without counting in windchill. WITH windchill it was -52 degrees Fahrenheit. HOLY CRAP. It's ridiculous! That is FIFTY-TWO degrees BELOW ZERO. It's hard to comprehend.

I wouldn't believe it myself if I hadn't lived through it. Definitely saving this story for my future grandchildren.

...Now that I am done with my rant I'll give you guys an update.

-Christmas was fantastic, but like every year it came and went to fast.
-Me and my mom have been crafting and making super fun cards in our spare time.
-I'm trying to decide on a mission date.
-Tomorrow I'm going job hunting, wish me luck? I'll keep ya posted on what happens.
-I've been taking TONS of pictures lately. (My boyfriends family, a family in our ward, my friends wedding reception, and I've got another family asking about it.) Its super fun! I'm not a professional by any means but I really do love doing it.

Sorry this post is short and super lame, but I just wanted to give a little update and let you know I'm home and loving it!

How it feels to be of a different faith

I came across this essay I wrote back in my junior year of high school on my experience of moving to Minnesota, thought I would share!

I find it almost humorous how as children we perceive the world through such naïve and censored lenses that we don’t realize the differences in others. However, I don’t see this as an entirely bad state of mind. In fact, I believe it allows us to see who a person actually is without corrupting our views with unsuitable stereo-types and judgments. As children grow up they naturally fall into a state where labeling is common. A person turns into a genius, an idiot, a beauty, a freak, or whatever other label they get marked with. We all come to realize that everyone isn’t exactly like us. People believe in, work for, encourage, promote, and reject, all different kinds of things and ideas. It makes us different from one another, and when society sees something that’s different, it usually makes it known.
Growing up in Utah, everyone I knew came with the label “Mormon,” or at least knew of the background and history that we hold. That’s just the way things were. In fact, people associate Utah with Mormons. It’s just as much a part of my childhood as it is a part of me. I found myself raised in the church and still to this day attend. No matter how far I look back I remember myself, every Sunday, sitting in the cushioned pews, singing and listening to the songs that fill the room as well as everyone’s hearts. The strength I’ve felt, and answers I have found, remain deeply embedded in my heart. Having no idea that my standards and outlooks made me distinctive or uncommon my state of mind remained unchanged. In my youthful state I assumed everyone was like me, which I find a commonality among the way children reason. With that in mind, I figured since my religion guides us to dress modestlyto not consume alcohol and drugs, to not drink coffee or tea, and even to not swear or say the Lords name in vain, that everyone else would act in accordance to those guidelines as well.   As a child, that’s all I knew, but as my life’s tally gains more and more slashes with each coming year, I’ve become greatly aware of something. My religion makes me different.
People, who don’t even know me, find the fact that I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as odd. This became apparent to me when my dad’s job tied my family together and shipped us some place new. Looking back, I remember my little thirteen year old self going to my new school for the first time. It was frightening to begin with.Walking into the new classrooms I could sense the curious eyes of those around me like I was an ant under a magnifying glass. As the days faded farther and farther away from my mind, so did my “New-kid- fears”. I began to settle in, meet new friends, and become more outgoing. However, people were quick to realize that I was different. The way I talked made me different. The things I participated in made me different. Overall something about me just wasn’t common.
Sitting in my boring, and somewhat uncomfortable desk, I can remember their faces turned in their chairs looking at me. Their questions, loud and echoing, are still sharp in my mind. I could hear the clock ticking in slow motion as I tried to come up with a response to the onslaught of voices surrounding me. I could feel my stomach turn as the nervousness crept in. Their eyes, anxious for answers, looked at me curiously as I choked out a nervous sounding laugh.
“So, you are Mormon, aren’t you?” the boy in front of me asked.
“Mmmhhmm,” I confirmed quietly. At least that question was easy.
“Are you really? How many moms do you have? Why can’t you date anyone, is it because your parents decide who you marry? Do you guys really wear that funny underwear? he questioned me, gaining more confidence.
The girl to my right had then decided to join the conversation, “Everyone knows Mormons have at least three moms, my dad even said so.”
“I uh, I only have one mom.” I replied, my face red from embarrassment.  “And I can date I just have to wait until I turn sixteen. And, uh, my underwear is normal.”
This memory will be kept with me for the rest of my life. I believe it has helped me grow and learn about the world around me.  Living in Minnesota has made aware that a lot of people are uninformed, unknowledgeable, or shocked by what a Mormon actually does and what we believe. Some look at me with an odd expression on their face as though I had just told them that I was grown from a petri dish. Like I’m something to be studied, or mocked. When in reality, I am just a person, a person with ten fingers, ten toes, two eyes, a nose, ears, a mouth, even a heart. Just like the billions of other people in this world.
All people believe in different things, practice different traditions, and have different standards. We shouldn’t look at someone and see them as anything besides a person. Whether they are a Muslim woman who completely covers her body as a sign of modesty, an Indian man who won’t cut his hair unless showing a sign of grief, or even a Mormon girl who believes that a young prophet could restore a Latter-day religion, they are human, just like everyone else. Rumors, jokes, and stereotypes fly from mouths of people who don’t even know, or don’t fully understand something. People scoff and say “You actually do that?” as if I would lie about it. When in turn, I could say the same about what they believe in as well.
In a way, it’s like the glasses that shielded our eyes as children have been completely discarded. Making us see the differences between us. We find them intimidating. The world creates a false sense of “normality”, but what is normal? Who is normal in a world full of people completely different from one another? I find the answer simple, no one. So I have one remaining question. How can someone judge and discriminate a person for their beliefs being different, when in the grand scheme of things, their own beliefs coexist differently as well? I do not think we should try to see through the naivety of youth, but that we should recognize the differences in ourselves as well as others and not see them as something worthy of being mocked, or causing shameTo look at someone as a person and for what they stand for, is how we should perceive and interact with each other. Through this, we can learn to respect our differences, whether you are of a different heritage, a different culture, or even of a different faith.

Fa-La-La-La-La'ing in Love with Winter

Hey guys! It's officially winter, and you know what that means! CHRISTMAS TIME. This is my favorite time of year. Hot cocoa, candy canes, presents, family, lights, sales, nativity, decorations, and Christmas music (I started that last one a couple weeks ago.... guilty as charged.)

This weekend I got into the Christmas spirit by heading out to temple square to see the lights with my man! It was SO much fun! When I came back home to Idaho my apartment was all decked out with decorations, Santa baby is playing on the radio, Christmas hymns in church, big sales in stores.... I cant help but feel it.

I've been infected by the Christmas bug.

So now combining Christmas fever with my love for making lists I decided to make a "Holiday Bucket-List"

  1. Make homemade Hot-Chocolate
  2. Do at least ONE Pinterest-decoration idea
  3. Make a snowman
  4. Have a snowball fight (and win)
  5. Go sledding
  6. Fall asleep by the fire
  7. Make a "Christmas playlist"
  8. Wear an ugly Christmas sweater
  9. Make a gingerbread house
  10. Make snow angels!
  11. Drink LOADS of eggnog (non-alcoholic of course)
  12. Make gingerbread men FOR my gingerbread house

Hello :)

Hey guys! My oh my. I have so much going on right now this post could be one of the longest/stressful/confusing posts I ever write (Er...type?) BUT Guess what? I don't wanna do that haha so I'm going to be lazy and tell you about something completely different! So here it is........
I am one of the dorkiest (Is that a word?) people you will ever meet. Here's why.....
  1. I enjoy reading, haha like... a lot. I am currently reading a book about mummies. :)
  2. I love anything/everything Marvel. For Christmas I want all of the Marvel hero movies that lead up to The Avengers (Which by the way is now in my top 10 favorite movies of all time)
  3. This summer, me and my mom worked out together, and I actually liked it. Woohoo! Go moms! Haha
  4. I am a Disney movie junky. Hardcore.
  5. I have a blog..  that's at least 35 nerd points
  6. I like lists :) Don't believe me? Look at what I'm doing right now O.o
  7. For fun, me and my boyfriend Cameron quote Disney movies.
  8. I like old things :) I don't know why.. I just find them interesting.
  9. When I was younger I collected rocks (Nerdy part is.. I still have them)
  10. I LOVE T-shirts. Haha I dress for comfort and occasionally dress it up a little bit (Which drives my sister Jess, the beautician, a bit bonkers every now and then i'm sure)
I could keep going...but I am tired and have Seminary in the morning. So adios amigos!

 P.s. Remember this guy???
He's gotten so big! I love ya Duke but you sure are a pain sometimes. Good thing he's cute!

Life

So this post is a little different than what I usually do, but I've been thinking about a lot of stuff lately and am at a point in my (young) life where I'm going to be making some very important decisions, decisions that really effect my future. I've felt so overwhelmed and stressed lately. I've started new things have gotten a few new responsibilities and I've realized a lot of time has passed! I'm not a little kid anymore! High school just flew by and now I'm a senior. I'm going to be gone next year. I'm applying to college in just a few months. So many important things have suddenly just swelled up and slapped me in the face. Of course I always will have the "I wish I did better at this" "I wish this didn't happen" " I wish I wish I wish.." but the things is, I don't really regret anything. My decisions alone brought me to where I am and I alone have to face the consequences whether they are good or bad. I'm scarred of what my future holds, heck, who isn't? Everything is so unsure it can become really intimidating. However something I do know is that no matter what  happens I will be okay. God has plans for me. They may not match up perfectly with mine but I know that I will be okay. I know that with faith and hard work I will not have to stand alone.
Goodnight everyone,
-Meg

What not to do at a stoplight, and such.

Hello :) Today's post is a little random.... Haha I want to share some life or death advice with all of you. Some, pertinent information for your everyday life.
  1. First off you should always leave the Disco before dawn.
  2. Silence is Golden, but duct tape is Silver ;)
  3. Therapy is expensive, but bubble wrap is cheap...Your choice.
  4. Eat it, Don't tweet it.
  5. Once you turn 60 don't pass a bathroom and never trust a fart!
  6. Don't sneeze when you are pregnant and have to pee.
  7. Correct punctuation is crucial. Example: "Let's Eat, Grandpa" vs. "Let's Eat Grandpa"
  8. The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
  9. Get hurt? No band-aids? Rub some dirt on it!
  10. Stop drinking Haterade (Hehe get it...Gatorade...But with Hate. Don't get it? Okay... Never mind.)
  11. Take a chill pill
  12. What not to do at a stoplight: Email, text, change clothes, put on makeup, write a poem, finger paint, make a sandwich, use the restroom, watch a movie, Go-Go dance, play COD, go fishing, .... and for those of you not catching the reference...it's Spongebob.
Obviously this isn't my most serious advice, but I hope it made your day just a little bit better. :)
