Farewell Talk

Today was the day that I delivered my farewell talk! I cant believe it! I leave here so soon but feel like I have so much left to do! I love you all and please know you will be greatly missed.

I remember a few short months ago when I first opened my mission call thinking “Really? I have to wait 73 whole days to go on my mission!?” Now, with only a little over a week left I can’t seem to wrap my head around the idea of how fast time has gone by. Packing, shopping, and more packing went by and now I’m up here delivering my farewell talk. The decision to serve a mission for me was not an easy one, it wasn't something I woke up to one morning, and it wasn't something that I've dreamt of since I was a little girl. I remember hearing the mission age change thinking “Oh my gosh that’s so great- for the other girls. That is so cool- for the other girls who plan on serving missions.” But as time went by random thoughts kept entering my mind, “I’m gonna serve a mission.” Then I’d brush it to the side not thinking anything of it. Again “I’m gonna serve a mission.” I wouldn't even pray about it, because I was scared I already knew the answer. It wasn't in my plans.
The thoughts happened more and more and more so I finally gave in and prayed about it, I prayed harder than I ever thought I could. And you know what I learned? God’s plans aren't always the same as my plans. And since then I've learned that same principle again and again. The idea of a mission grew on me. I became more and more sure that it was the right thing to do and I became more and more excited about it. I knew that somewhere in this big scary world, someone needed me. Little blonde Megan, from Lakeville. Someone in this world was praying to God for what? help, comfort, and guidance? Cure to addiction? An end to loneliness? I don’t know. All I know is that by giving myself to the Lord for a small time, I could just be the answer to what someone is praying for.
Throughout his years as our prophet, President Monson has encouraged us as members to “Reach out to Rescue” Not only as missionaries but as church members, neighbors, friends, associates, families, and in all other aspects of our lives. He goes on explaining ways to do this such as service to others, inviting people to church, standing as an example, sharing your beliefs and many more. We can rescue friends of different faiths, members who have fallen away, and we can even help the friends and loved ones who have passed on through temple work. It’s a scary thing putting yourself out there. Risking embarrassment, rejection, ridicule, the list goes on and on. But just think how grateful that person will be when they come back to church after years being inactive and realizing how much they've missed it, or how about when your friend comes to church for the first time and feels a happiness and peace she’s never felt before, or even when your ancestors finally receive the blessings of the temple after years and years of waiting in anticipation. “And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father! And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!” (D&C 18:15-16)
As my mission has drawn closer I've received a few emails from my mission president in Guayaquil Ecuador. One email he sent talked about “Our Mission” and the people of Guayaquil. He states  “too many of them have fallen away over the years, and so besides the great work of finding, teaching, and baptizing our Father’s children, we have the great opportunity to work alongside Him in finding and rescuing His lost sheep.” After reading that I realized something, I realized that the people in Guayaquil, thousands of miles away, in a different country, speaking a different language, have something in common with us. We all need help. We all need someone to reach out and rescue us. The people of Ecuador need someone to stop by and see how they are doing, invite them to come back to church, just like the people of Lakeville.
The idea of “Reaching out to rescue” will be present for me in many ways for the next 18 months. The first thing that comes to mind will be as I learn the Spanish language. My Companion will be rescuing me a lot, I am sure. Another one that comes to mind will be as I enter the MTC in Mexico, the support and prayers from my family and loved ones will rescue me as well as strengthen me. Lastly, as I lay in bed at night tired and discouraged thinking, what in the world am I doing here? Am I good enough to be here? My Savior, the only one who will know exactly how I am feeling, will reach out his loving marked hands and rescue me, little blonde Megan from Lakeville.
When we reach out to others, we can in part become a little more like our Savior. Offering a relief that only His gospel can give. By putting our imperfect selves out there, offering a perfect gospel, Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ will make up the rest. Even if the person we help is just a little “so-and so” from Lakeville, or Guayaquil, or anywhere else in the World they deserve a chance to be rescued. It’s just our job to offer it. “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God” (D&C 18:10)
My life has changed so much in the past couple years. I felt like someone has just hit the fast forward button and forgotten to press play again. I graduated, went to BYU in Provo, went to BYU in Idaho, my sister got married, I received a mission call, I have friends serving missions, getting engaged, perusing degrees and facing all kinds of “Grown-up” decisions and trials. I know that some of you younger kids are sitting in the pews eating cheerios and coloring and can’t quite yet think of such things. But they come, and sometimes it’s hard. I know some of you older folks in the chapel are thinking “Wow, I remember when I was that young. And I remember thinking that stuff was hard. It came and went, and it was hard but you face even harder things.” We all go through tough things in our lives, whether it be as a young kid feeling like you don’t have friends, a teenager who hangs with the wrong crowd, a young adult trying to face the world, or a grown up trying to raise and provide for a family. We all could use a little rescuing. We all need to be like our Savior and listen to our prophet’s call to reach out and rescue. And times will come where we are looking for someone to reach out and praying to God for an answer… and wondering to ourselves. “What in the World am I doing here, Lord, help me be good enough.” and we will feel like there is no answer. But be patient, the Lord hears your prayers. He sent a savior to this earth before we were even born to answer our prayers, to comfort us, to cleanse us, to guide us, and to rescue us.
President Monson continues his address saying “In this remarkable dispensation of the fullness of times, our opportunities to serve one another are limitless. We’re surrounded by those in need of our attention, our encouragement, our comfort, our support, our kindness—[…] As we serve our fellowman, we serve the Lord. “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these …, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). May we ever be found performing such service.” He goes on explaining not only are we helping others by doing this but helping ourselves and receiving blessings from the Lord.
I know that President Monson is a Prophet of God, given to us for instruction and guidance in these latter-days. I know that his message to reach out to rescue is God sent. And by doing so we are becoming more like our Savior. A couple months ago I came across something in the ensign. To which sadly I couldn't find the direct quote for, but it said something along the lines of in a world where such sorrow and hurt are present its easy to become discourage and afraid. But we already know who wins the fight. We already know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, we know that God’s goodness beats evil in the end, it’s all just a matter of choosing which side we are on on. President Monson finishes his statement by saying “As we now go forward, may we follow His example. He left His footprints in the sands of the seashore, but He left His teaching principles in the hearts and in the lives of all whom He taught. He instructed His disciples, and to us He speaks the same words, “Follow thou me” (John 21:22). May we ever be found doing so.”

I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve. I know that this truly is Christ’s church. I know that Christ lives and his gospel still lives on this earth because of the effort and faith of Joseph Smith. I know that he was a prophet of God sent to deliver us the Book of Mormon. I know that all the lessons in church, early mornings in seminary, institute classes, and prayers from family and leaders have all pointed me here. They brought me here so that I could worthily go through the temple and that I can stand here today and thank you for supporting me as a missionary. I felt like the Grinch from Dr. Seuss’s “The Grinch who stole Christmas” because when I opened my mission call my heart grew three sizes that day. I love people I have never met, and who I’m going to struggle to communicate with for quite some time. I know with the Lord’s help all things are made possible and I know I am in good hands. I love you all so much. You will be greatly missed. I am grateful for my family and friends. They have given me so much and still give every day. I’m going to miss them dearly. But know that the Lord needs me, and I am just answering his call. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

The Final Countdown

I cant believe how quickly time escapes you when you have so much to get done. It's almost comical. When I first came home from BYU-I the days seemed long and careless. Especially in contrast to my fleeting and stress filled days I have recently encountered.

However stressed or scared I may be I need to keep in mind that I am doing great things. This thought has been repeatedly brought up to me by my awesome mom and is something I try to keep in mind. I feel like a lot of the time I get so caught up in the checklist of things to do and things to worry about that I forget to just step back and breathe.

Breathe in, I can be stressed and happy. Breathe out, This is the right thing for me. Breathe in, I'm going to a beautiful place. Breathe out, and God will be with me every step of the way....

I'm so excited for my mission, and I still have 100% confidence that this is where I should be at this point in my life. I cant help but obsess over every detail and stress about the little things because that's just who I am. BUT that doesn't mean I cant enjoy today. My mission is coming fast! I need to make my last days here happy ones. I have so many loved ones supporting me and so many awesome things happening!

Here is just a few to prove it...

I turn NINETEEN in two days! On the 28th I will officially be old enough to serve a mission! It's funny to look back and see all the amazing experiences this last year has given me. I cant wait to see what this one brings!

ALSO.

I see Cameron soon!!!
For those of you who haven't seen my sappy Facebook posts, Cameron has been away at school for the past couple months and we haven't been able to see each other for quite some time (114 days to be exact.. haha) AND HE IS FINALLY COMING HOME! I see him next Wednesday and couldn't be more excited! He is my best friend and I love him to death. I'm sure my family is just as excited to have him back because I'm pretty positive I have been driving them crazy.

A lot of chapters in my life are coming to a close as my mission draws near...but I can keep smiling because "When God closes a door, somewhere He opens a window"

Whoopsie!

So there I was, hanging out with my family trying to think of something to blog about, when I looked down at the clock. Crap. Its Wednesday.... I'm now a half hour late to institute. After kind of weighing the options of running around the house getting ready then speeding there I decided to just stay home.

Now what.

I feel like I  have so much to do but when it comes down to it there is a lot that I've already taken care of. My brain is tricking me! I've always been the kind of person that stresses over all the dumb little things but is totally chill and fine about things that I should worry about.

On a positive note I could not be more excited for Ecuador. I've done all I can from Google to my local library and anything else I can get my hands on to learn about my home for the next year and a half.

Of course I'm scared, stressed beyond belief, and feel completely unqualified to represent our Savior, but I know that if I try my best and leave the rest up to the Lord I will be blessed.

It's go time!

I'm going to the ECUADOR, GUAYAQUIL WEST MISSION, like what? I couldn't be more excited! its crunch time now though. I report in less than 72 days and have a huge list of things to do. I will never feel prepared but I might as well try, right?

I took Spanish in high school, but its also been a year since then, and even if it hadn't I cant really do more than say "Hi, my names Megan. I like dogs." (I'm exaggerating... but still. I'm freaking out!)

As scared as I am, I couldn't be more excited.  I know this is where the Lord needs me and I cant wait to serve the people of Ecuador for the next year and a half of my life.

If you wanna watch me open my mission call, here is a little video that I made. Enjoy!

Where in the WORLD am I going?

Still no mission call, but we are getting real excited! (Except for Mom... Mom is just getting nervous, haha)

I can't wait for the news, Colorado? Thailand? Iowa? Spain? I JUST WANNA KNOW.

I am beyond excited, no matter where I go, to serve the Lord as a missionary. Though every experience varies in language, culture, population, and food they all have one thing in common... The message to be taught. I love my Father in Heaven, I know Christ died for us and atoned for our sins, I know that God blesses us with prophets both in biblical times and in modern day. I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet and restored Christ's church. The Book of Mormon is true, as well as the bible. President Monson is a man of God and the Prophet of our church today. This is the message I am called to share.

......AND I CANT WAIT!

But for now..... "I hope they call me on a mission..."

Waiting on a Call

Hello :)

As most of you know I am going to be serving as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints! (If you didn't know that...well... SURPRISE! haha)

I will be living away from my friends and family for a year and a half where in the only contact I will have with them will be via email once a week and snail mail. Crazy right?

If I cant do all the new trendy things such as play on my iPad, watch TV, go to the movies, hang with friends, then what WILL I be doing you may ask? Well, in short, I will be helping others know God's love, teach of Christ and his doctrines, serve people, and anything else I am called to do.

Your next question is probably where am I going? And you know what, I wish I knew! Luckily, I will be finding out any day now. Iowa? Alaska? New York? Idaho? Germany? Russia? France? Mexico? The list is endless.

For 18 months I will be somewhere else in the WORLD.. speaking English? Spanish? Khmer? Russian? ... I have no idea. All I do know is that it is exactly what I need to be doing with my life at this time.

My mind is going crazy trying to guess where I will be spending the next years of my life. I am scared outta my mind but I know that wherever I go I will be blessed. I know that God will protect me and my friends/family while I am away. I know this gospel is true and I cant wait to help it bless others as much as it has blessed me.

Wish me luck! Please keep me in your prayers these next few days as I wait for my call. I might just go crazy with all the anticipation! Seeya next time folks.

Late-Night Pizza (Experiences of a college student)

Hello everyone,

Just sitting here on a random Friday night with nothing going on so I thought I'd make a quick post. College life is pretty much what everyone says it is. In simple terms I'd say it's tiring, stressful, exciting, busy, fun, crazy, overall it is an adventure. Here are some random things that have gone on the past two semesters to explain what I mean:

1. Late/early trips to Denny's!
This summer me and my friends would randomly find ourselves hungry around one in the morning so we would think to ourselves "Why not?" It taught me that pancakes taste good at ANY time.

2. Movie Marathons
No joke, I do not think me or my roommate Emily have ever seen so many movies in this short of a time span in our entire lives. From Disney to romance we have pretty much watched it all!

3. Homework Binges
Okay... I know this isn't a GOOD thing but its impressive nonetheless. Lets just say sometimes I let procrastination get the best of me so there are some days where it is non-stop cramming.

4. Creative shopping
This one is funny yet sad. What I mean by it is obviously, being a college kid, I am broke. This however, gives me the opportunity to get creative with planning meals and grocery shopping all the while paying for gas!

5. Weird Sleep Schedule
Late nights early mornings, early nights, late mornings! With different classes throughout the week my sleep is never really "scheduled" sometimes I sleep in some days I get up early!
(lets just say, on the early days I do NOT look cute)

6. Roomies
My roommate as you guys know is my friend Emily Briggs and its been great! We are both stubborn as heck and always driving each other nuts but I wouldn't trade her for anyone! Having a roommate is like having a sleepover with your best friend every night!

College has been great and definitely a new experience. There are some things that suck but even the cons help me learn and grow as a person! I love college and I love the experiences it has brought me!

-Tired of laundry, homework, and ramen but loving it all the same!

XOXO- a student named Megan

Here I am!

This summer has been anything but boring. I've moved out, traveled to Provo, and experienced life here at BYU.

My semester here in Provo is almost over but I've had memories and experienced things I will never forget. Although it will be hard to leave to Idaho this fall I know that if I work hard and try my best everything will turn out how it's supposed to be.

Anyways, here goes a little mini review of whats been going on......

I've hiked waterfalls with my roommate Caree!
Chilled with my FHE group!
Went dancing with my man!
Watched Fireworks!

and sooooooo much more stuff. I truly am having the time of my life here. Sure I have my ups and downs but I know this is where I want to be and I cant wait to see where life takes me. Feeling good!

Someone Worth Keepin'

Hello :) This time i'm going to talk about one of the most amazing girls I have ever met. Someone who has really made me more outgoing, who understands my humor, and someone who I miss very much. Her name is Karly :) When I first moved to Lakeville I'm pretty sure me and her had one of the most awkward relationships of all time. (Trust me...it was bad) She was friends with me because she felt bad and I was friends with her because no one else liked me yet, haha. Anyways, a couple months ago she moved away to Virginia.. and it was REALLY hard for her and for everyone she left behind. You see, I have moved a lot in my life, and when I say a lot I mean a lot. So i'm used to moving, having to start over, but this time was different. This time some one was leaving me. I felt like I "lost" one of my best friends. But I quickly realized.... She can't get rid of me that easily ;) I know that Virginia is really far from Minnesota, but that has no affect on how I feel about miss Karly. She is an amazing friend and I don't know what I would do without her. I love her so much and the memories I have with her! I cannot wait for this spring break to come so I can see her again and experience a trip of a lifetime! I love you Karly! I miss all the times we would laugh at each others jokes when every one else thought we were dumb. Haha, and also, I secretly am jealous of your face. IT'S HOT. Basically, your the kind of friend for me and definitely someone worth keeping.
